Tunein Followers vs RAJAR figures

Not sure if anyone has done it before, but I'd like to do some analysis to see if there is any correlation between Tunein followers and RAJAR figures. I'm not aware there is any way I can extract this info myself (apart from painfully). Any chance of an export of your data? I'll post any findings back here for general consumption.

Hi, Glyn,

It's probably even easier for us to do that analysis ourselves, to be honest. We've got the RAJAR, we've got the Tunein followers, they're all in a (quite complicated) database, so we should probably be able to relatively quickly pull the data out - and keep it updated, since our TuneIn data is updated weekly.

Um... what do you think we should do?

So: BBC Radio 1 has 9,699,000 listeners; and 3,100,000 TuneIn followers. That's 3.1x
KCFM has 92,000 listeners; and 8,200 TuneIn followers. That's 11.2x

Do you think we should be calculating them based on that?

(In any case: we could output both numbers, order them by that multiplier, and then it would be easier for you to grab that data).

This would be interesting set of data James, especially for CR stations where no figures are available for fm, or can get access to the full rajar figures due to cost, but a guestamate could be done using the "other" on RAJAR data within TX area of the CR station .

I think we'll find they don't say much - not least because Radioplayer should, if it is doing its job, replace TuneIn for most listeners. But happy to pull the figures and see what happens.

A tenuous connection to this thread is that it should also give some indication of how many people are listening to pirate radio stations.

Usual approach when investigating if there is a relationship or not is initially to do an x-y scatter chart. If there is no relationship it will just look like an evenly spread mass of dots, or crosses or whatever. If there is any relationship then the data points will cluster - ie: hypothesis would be a diagonal line from origin up and to the right. Once plotted in Excel, if there is a relationship then it actually calculates the formula for you. If you are clever at stats you can probably calculate the confidence margin and other teccie stuff.

It would also be interesting to see relationship with other metrics you may have such as Facebook likes, Twitter followers etc. Or a combination of these metrics might give better correlation.

Of course this can never give a precise mapping from one set of figures to another, but if there is sufficient evidence of a correlation, then it could give a justifiable (and independent) listening figure for stations that are not on RAJAR.

PS: It seems replies to posts on this feedback area are not emailed - I was not aware anyone was interested until I checked this morning!

I'll take a look. I've got childcare duties today though, so might be hard.

The email notifications: you're right, currently this system only sends you replies to comments, not replies to original posts. Which is a bit poor. Another job for me to do...

Come on James, pull your finger out! No LinkedIn login still either ;-). Or post likes...

If it's easier just send me a big spreadsheet or csv or something and I'll do some data hacking. Pointless you developing new functionality if it shows no correlation.

Hello, Glyn. Well, here you go... an explorer into this data.

You can zoom in; here's a closeup for smaller stations.

I don't think I can see much correlation there, but, you know, it's always worth having a play!
