AM Radio
Many of the switched off AM stations are Public service stations wich simulcast on FM/DAB+ in Europe. These located frequencys are aviable to private broadcasters or community radio in Europe. Many low power stations prefer to be on AM instead of DAB+ like community stations or small private stations. Lack of FM frequencies in an area.

The "lack of FM frequencies" is largely a myth put about by government regulators who don't have the manpower, funding or motivation to get out and look for them.
In the EU there is typically a maximum of 204 FM channels available in any location.
Just listen - you'll find plenty of space.
