Switch Radio is the community radio station for North East Birmingham. We broadcast to some of the most deprived communities in the UK. The objective for Switch Radio is two-fold; firstly, to use the platform of community radio to entertain, inform and engage and involve the local community with us and each other. Secondly, we provide hands-on training and media experience to help local people do something practical about unemployment, skills training, education and social isolation. We are an accredited training centre for the delivery of qualification units in Sound and Media Production.

We provide live and locally relevant daytime programming, delivered by local volunteers. In the evenings, we hand the station over to our capable specialist presenters whose shows cover musical genres that are currently underserved in the local area.

We are looking to recruit a freelance sales executive to help manage our advertising and sponsorship activities. Experience in monetising outside activity would be advantageous. We would expect the successful applicant to have the initiative, in conjunction with the board, to drive the position forward and enhance our ways of working around advertising. Broadly speaking, you should have:

  • excellent sales skills and a drive to sell
  • strong business skills and an understanding of SMEs
  • excellent writing and presentation skills
  • the ability to appreciate the role of and utilise our non-broadcast channels to maximise advertising/sponsorship income
  • the ability to think creatively and generate original ideas
  • knowledge of the radio market, different station and programme styles, and audience demographics

You'll be experienced in sales, so you don't need us to tell you the rest of what's required for a sales position. This position is freelance, but our commission is highly competitive and you'll be doing something that supports the station in helping the local community.

Our technology is generally web-based, so we are happy to accept applications from those who are already (or would like to be) home-based. The key element we seek is that you understand, can identify and subsequently deliver for small/medium businesses in our transmission area.
