BBC South Today at Oxford is looking for a first class Assistant Editor to join our news team.

We are a sub-opt of the regional TV news programme BBC South Today (with its main studios in Southampton), which each weekday transmits to over 1.5 million BBC1 viewers in central southern England. The opt covers Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, north-east Wiltshire and parts of Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire.

The programme aims to bring audiences original local journalism that has impact and relevance. We hold local decision makers to account, tell the important stories and celebrate the people and the places in our area. The team also assists with other BBC South programmes such as Inside Out and Sunday Politics.

Role Responsibility

We are looking for an Assistant Editor to assist in providing overall editorial and managerial support to our TV Editor who is based in Southampton. You will assist the Editor in leading a team of journalists to bring the best of BBC journalism to our audience. You will also help guide the graphics, editing and other staff who are necessary to bring the programme to air. Your main role will be to plan and output the programme on a regular basis while also leading and managing a team of 17 editorial/technical staff.

The Ideal Candidate

It is essential that you are able to demonstrate a considerable knowledge and practical experience of daily broadcast journalism including output editing and reporting, together with a strong interest in news and current affairs. You’ll also have a broad range of knowledge on subjects ranging from politics and business to health. You must have acute editorial judgement and be able to take sensitive decisions quickly and decisively and a good command of the BBC's policies in all relevant areas. Creativity is essential as the programme has a desire to experiment with new production techniques. You'll need good interpersonal skills to deal tactfully with reporters and presenters. A working knowledge of the Quantel editing system and VJ skills would also be an advantage. Oxford is a small multi-skilled team and the successful candidate will need to fill in behind other newsroom roles on some occasions. This role combines editorial experience with leadership responsibilities and would be a good development opportunity for someone who sees themselves as a future Editor.

You should have understanding and some experience of leading a team of people, and the ability to motivate and develop editorial staff to make innovative and imaginative contributions to programmes. You will need to manage resources, staff and budgets in order to contribute to output in the most cost-effective manner. As well as an understanding of budgeting and financial planning is involved which requires knowledge of BBC resources.
