Luxury flats plan for historic newspaper office gets go-ahead

A historic regional daily office is set to be transformed into luxury flats under a new scheme.

Developers applied for permission to develop the second and third floors of Wolverhampton Express & Star’s former Queen Street building into 38 “stylish” apartments, along with communal areas and a gym on the second floor.

According to the E&S, the development will also contain office space, which the developers claim will support the city’s growth plans for business and culture.

The scheme has now been given the go-ahead by City of Wolverhampton Council planners.

The offices have been vacant since 2023, after the newspaper’s editorial staff moved out to nearby Mander House in the centre of the city.

The site had been home to the Express & Star since the 1880s.

A supporting statement from the developers, who have formed a company called The Newspaper Building Ltd, stated the proposals will blend “historical charm with modern functionality” and emphasised their “deep roots” in the city.

The council had previously earmarked the site as having potential for redevelopment into up to 145 for residential properties.
