One of the first to split output between FM and AM, the station was the home of Yorkshire's networked Classic Gold service in the late 1980s, while the station was owned by the Yorkshire Radio Network, and the output of "Pennine, Hallam and Viking", sustaining services to YRN's FM services.
The station's board room is an opulent wood-panelled room dating from the building's previous life as a marine insurance company. Directions to the station from anywhere in the North of England are relatively simple: "Get on the M62 and turn right at the second set of traffic lights". The station once had a mascot in the form of Erik the Viking, who was also heard on-air in the company of presenter Steve King, who still works for the wider Bauer group.’ for 96.9 Viking FM
