On 2022-01-08 03:22:39 Martin Phillp changed abstract to Radio X is a national digital alternative rock music station from Global. The station originally launched as Xfm in 1992 as a series of short term RSLs in the Camden area of north London. In 1996, Xfm was awarded the final London wide FM licence, beating Capital Gold. Xfm launched on 1st September 1997, the day after Princess Diana's death, which led to a low key launch, which didn't help ratings, however the independent era of the station helped launched the careers of Ricky Gervais who was the Head of Speech and his assistant Stephen Merchant who went on to write The Office and Extras for BBC Two. Capital Radio Group acquired the station less than a year later. They attempted to introduce an AOR format similar to Virgin Radio (which Capital also tried to acquire later); this was met by resistance from Xfm's small but loyal audience; and the station's original alternative format was mainly restored with a mainstream skew targeting twenty something men. On 7th September 2015, it was announced that Xfm would close on Sunday 13th September and relaunch as a national digital station 'Radio X' which would feature mainstream presenters such as Chris Moyles, Vernon Kay, Ricky Wilson and Johnny Vaughan and more of a male focus than before. Radio X launched on Monday 21st September at 6.30am with the Chris Moyles Breakfast Show. Unlike Xfm, Radio X breakfast and drive have a heavy amount of speech content. The station can also be heard on FM in London and Manchester.’ for Radio X
