The UK's best podcasts - all the award winners

Fathers and Sons by Radio Wolfgang and Mr Porter has been named the audioBoom Podcast of the Year at the inaugural British Podcast Awards. The event in King’s Cross, London, this evening also saw Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review pick up the Listeners' Choice award and Adam Buxton named Podcast Champion.

Created to showcase and celebrate the strength, depth and diversity of the UK industry, the British Podcast Awards named winners from 15 categories covering the vast expanse of genres available to subscribe to and download. The three special awards – Podcast of Year, Listeners' Choice and Podcast Champion – took the total to 18 winners.

In total, more than 400 podcasts entered, with more than 100,000 public votes coming in for the Listeners' Choice Award that went to Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review.

Fathers and Sons, produced by Mr Porter and Radio Wolfgang, explores contemporary masculinity through the eyes of fathers and their sons. It celebrates all aspects of fatherhood, looking at the highs and lows of birth, death, love, money, health and inheritance. Radio Wolfgang is an independent online and app-based radio station co-founded by George Lamb and Colm Roche.

Adam Buxton was crowned Podcast Champion, the award that recognises the person that has done the most to help and develop podcasts in 2016. The Adam Buxton Podcast has taken industry by storm and each week welcomes some of the best-known names, with guests like Steve Coogan, Sally Wainwright, Kathy Burke and Louis Theroux.

Amongst the winners (full list with runners-up below) was Hip Hop Saved My Life with Romesh Ranganathan and audioBoom, which was named the Best Entertainment Podcast with Maple Street Studios. The Best Comedy Podcast supported by Podiant went to the Beef & Dairy Network Podcast hosted by Benjamin Partridge.

The Best Current Affairs Podcast was handed to The Inquiry - BBC Current Affairs for BBC World Service, the Best True Crime Podcast was named as They Walk Among Us with Benjamin Fitton and Rosanna Fitton, whilst Fight Disciples picked up the Best Sports Podcast.

In recognition of the non-British offering, How To Be A Girl was named Best International Podcast. The show stars Seattle single mum, Marlo Mack, alongside her young transgender daughter who discuss their lives together and the challenges they face.

A stellar cast of more than 50 independent judges from across the audio and media industry supported the British Podcast Awards. Chaired by SONY Award winning Helen Zaltzman, the judges included Miranda Sawyer (The Observer), Maria Williams (Radio Producer), Rhianna Dhillon (Film Critic), Fiona Sturges (Financial Times), Phil Maguire (Prison Radio Association), Caroline Crampton (New Statesman), Marie McPartlin (Somerset House), Michael Hill (Radioplayer) and Paul Donovan (The Sunday Times).

Hosted by Olly Mann (Answer Me This!, The Modern Mann) presenters on the night included Edith Bowman, Grace Dent and James Cooper from My Dad Wrote a Porno.

Matt Deegan, co-founder of the British Podcast Awards, along with Matt Hill, said: “The Podcast phenomenon is growing greater by the week and Britain is producing some of the best content in the world. We felt that needed recognition and what better way than through the first ever British Podcast Awards.

“I want to congratulate all of the winners and runners-up; it was an almost impossible job for the judges to pick between the entries. Despite that, they have delivered a brilliant cross-section of winners that represent the best that British podcasting has to offer.”

Adam Buxton said: “I’d like to thank everyone who nominated me Podcast Champion of the Year. Wow, I’ve never been the champion of anything before, except maybe being passive aggressive and onanism so it’s very exciting for me. I genuinely love the medium of podcasting. I think that it has the power to promote curiosity, to promote understanding and of course to promote Squarespace.”
