Meet Zeus, the cat who has caused quite a ‘purrr’ with listeners in West Wales.

After a story about Mango, Tiverton's Tesco cat, went viral online last week, a very similar story began to emerge of another feline friend, this time in rural West Wales. Zeus is not just a regular visitor to one shop: he’s made an entire street in Ammanford town centre his home- and he even has his own Facebook page.

It all came to light after Radio Carmarthenshire breakfast show listeners were encouraged to share their peculiar domestic pet stories last week. Presenter Jay Curtis was bombarded with stories about a similar cat, who despite having his own home and owner, visits various stores and shops nearby on a daily basis.

Such is his brazen attitude that traders in the Carmarthenshire town are now on first-name terms with him, and don’t bat an eyelid when he pops in for something to eat or to find a quiet place to sleep in.

His story has promoted a whirlwind weekend of media interested and the DJ has now been left pondering about the next stop for famous moggie. A role in a film? Autobiography? Perhaps even a spot on Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage production of Cats?

Listener Debbie Rees said: “He is so funny, I went in Store 21 before Christmas and I thought he was an ornament, he was laying on a blanket on top of a bathroom chest.”

Gail Butcher wrote on the Radio Carmarthenshire Facebook page: “Have seen this cat so many times, the funniest one was when he was laying in a Halloween shop display and everyone thought he was part of the display.”

Ali Moss said: “I think he likes shopping in home bargains – seen him in there looking at the latest offers a few times.”

Tracy Stevens added: “He’s always trying to get in to the butchers in town.”

Jay said: “I cant believe the amount of people who have been in touch with me about this cat. Firstly on Thursday, I was inundated with messages from hundreds of listeners, all with a story or picture to share. This was followed on Friday by calls from Newspapers, Radio and even TV channels, all wanting to discover more about this cute kitty! He’s made such an impression locally and nationally and seems to be loving his time in the spotlight.”

“He’s so well loved he even has his own dedicated Facebook page set up by an unknown admirer to give his fans an outlet to share their love,” he added.

The Facebook page 'Zeus Ammanford' has attracted nearly 700 likes in just 3 days.
