It was the first commercial radio station to launch in the UK in October 1973 as a news and conversation station for the London area and was also the home of IRN, Independent Radio News who provided news bulletins for other Independent Local Radio stations.
The station has had a turbulent history, being sold to Crown Communications, then launching two stations, an upmarket station on FM called LBC Crown FM, which later relaunched as LBC Newstalk, with the AM station becoming London Talkback Radio, targeting LBC's older phone-in listeners.
In 1993, LBC lost it's licence to broadcast from October 1994 and the company went into administration. The new licence owner, London News Radio, backed by Reuters acquired the station and kept LBC and London Talkback Radio on-air until the licence transferred to them .
LBC and London Talkback Radio closed down at 6am on 8th October 1994 and was replaced by a rolling news service on FM and London Newstalk (later losing London from it's name) on AM.
A new consortium acquired the stations in 1996, backed by the GWR Group and ITN, LBC as a brand returned on AM in July and moved to ITN in Gray's Inn Road.
In 2002, Chrysalis, the then owner of Heart acquired LBC and it's sister station News Direct. On Christmas Eve, LBC's AM service closed down and merged with News Direct to provide a temporary service of rolling news throughout the Christmas period called "LBC News"
In January 2003, LBC News continued on AM, with the relaunch of LBC on FM as an upmarket speech station.
Once again, LBC suffered from poor listening figures and a new programme controller David Lloyd was brought in to attract younger listeners. Outside of breakfast, topical discussion was axed for lighter chat and comedy. Iain Lee, a comedian was introduced onto drive, while disenfranchising the old LBC audience, brought in younger listeners.
However LBC went through another change in format when the station was acquired along with the Chrysalis group by Global. The return to a phone-in tabloid driven topical format returned which survives to this day.
