Darren Harper took over the airwaves on Radio Yorkshire between 7am and 10am this morning with Leeds United FC reporter Thom Kirwin and Pigeon Detectives guitarist his studio guests.

Darren said “I am delighted to be back at breakfast. I am looking forward to building the show along with my team of regular co-hosts and plenty of guests from the world of sport and entertainment.”

Along with a sports based breakfast show, Radio Yorkshire will now move towards creating a stronger sporting brand, with more interviews and features being broadcast during our day time hours.

Our “classic hits” music playlist will also shift to cater for a sport-friendly audience with the addition of more new music and Yorkshire acts such as Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs and The Kaiser Chiefs.

New head of Broadcasting and Communications Sam Brydges said “I want to place on record my thanks to Trevor Thomas for his work at breakfast since launch. This change in direction means more sport, particularly at breakfast and we felt Darren was the right man for the job going forward.”

“Thom Kirwin is also joining the team not only as a regular breakfast co-host but also in our Wednesday night football slot. I’m confident that with Thom’s wealth of experience and great following the show will attract not only Leeds United fans but football fans across Yorkshire and beyond. We hope to be announcing more new shows soon.”

Radio Yorkshire does not just focus on football, Super League rugby, cricket, horse racing, athletics, cycling, tennis and darts. The station has been providing extensive Super League coverage this season.

“We have been able to give great Super League coverage which has helped us build a strong rugby league brand. From commentary from 50 live Super League games to Mark Wilson and Richard Shaw-Wright’s Monday night Super League review show. We have had great guests on including Salford Red Devils owner Dr Marwan Koukash, Leeds Rhinos legend Garry Schofield and numerous players and journalists.

“We are also looking forward to hopefully going down to Wembley later this month, if Leeds Rhinos or Castleford Tigers make it through, to cover one if not both sides for an all Yorkshire final.”

Radio Yorkshire is also expanding its video content with our YouTube channel breaking 30,000 hits in the last seven days. This will mean greater use of our live studio cameras, more bespoke video content, as well as the continued growth of our live news and sport show Yorkshire Today which is streamed live from our TV studio both on the web and via digital radio.
