Facts and stats

BBC Radio 3 is the BBC's classical music station. It also broadcasts jazz, world music, drama, culture and the arts. The successor to the Third Programme, Radio 3's probably best known for its coverage of the BBC Proms, a series of concerts each summer that are mostly held in the Royal Albert Hall.

Challenged by Classic FM's populist programming, Radio 3 has a careful balance to take between ensuring its programming is accessible and relatively popular, while also avoiding accusations of "dumbing down".

The BBC is one of the UK's largest employers of classical music artists, running a number of orchestras and music groups.

BBC Radio 3 operates a high-quality internet radio stream on its website, and regularly experiments with surround-sound and multi-channel broadcasts.
