BBC Radio 4 Extra started its life as BBC7, before being rebranded to better reflect its programming content of repeated programmes from BBC Radio 4. It is scheduled in a complementary way to Radio 4; for example, after the 6.30pm comedy has finished on Radio 4, there is more comedy on Radio 4 Extra. It also contains longer versions of some programmes, like Desert Island Discs.
The station is a digital-only service, available on DAB Digital Radio, online and on digital television.
